Our beautiful vineyard site is located on the sunrise side of Afton Mountain. There the vines are protected from frost by our elevation of nearly 1000 feet, shielded from excessive rain by the mountain's rain shadow, and dried by the prevailing breezes flowing through the nearby Rockfish and Humpback gaps.
Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's first farm wineries; our original vines were planted in 1978. Those blocks are still in production today. With major expansions in the late '80s and a 50% increase in acres planted since 2009, we now grow a total of 15 varieties on 24 acres.

Fully Remodeled in 2015, Ugly’s Grill & Bar opened in 1991 after Ugly John purchased Duck Creek Landing and established Thunder Bay Marina. Since opening day it has set the standard for open air restaurant and club operations on Grand Lake, for over twenty-five years. This Grand Lake tradition, where beautiful people come to get Ugly, features live entertainment during the season, plenty of courtesy slips for access from the water, a full bar, which is home to the famous Pink Thang and the Ugly Mary, both personal concoctions developed by Ugly John himself.
