Where'd we get the name?? "Bear Island" is a fictitious name based on a family story. When young, the Westover children were afraid of running into a bear up at their cabin in Cascade, ID. So their parents told them that all of the bears would chase the deer out onto the frozen lake in the winter, where the bears would get tired and hibernate. When they woke up in the spring, the lake had thawed, the deer were gone and the bears were stuck out there! Hence the nickname of "Bear Island." Now we are naming our brewery after our story. We opened the first Even Stevens on June 24th, 2014 in Salt Lake City, UT. After donating over 30,000 sandwiches to surrounding non-profits in our first 6 months – we knew we were on to something.
