Home-made, affordable food: cooked and served with love.
x-church kitchen is a community café based in the renovated Sunday schoolroom of x-church. It is a separate business under the wing of Slumgothic Ltd, a not-for-profit company which develops and manages the former church of St John the Divine.
x-church kitchen aims to provide healthy and excellent but simple food at affordable prices as a service to local people. Our staff and volunteers aim to provide a welcoming, uplifting and comforting place for people to meet and find companionship.
A genuinely friendly welcome is an essential aspect of x-church kitchen. We aim to make our welcome to customers truly unique. Coming here should feel like coming home. Our name, ‘x-church kitchen,’ suggests the heart of the home: the kitchen: a source of warmth, nourishment and comfort, an informal place to relax.
We aim to cover costs and make a modest profit in order to create a sustainable business, but x-church kitchen is different from most cafés because of its generous and creative spirit. It’s a social enterprise, created for the benefit and inclusion of local people. There will be no complicated or confusing pricing, no fancy choices, nothing wasteful or excessive in our approach.
We are starting small but we have big ambitions and we want to learn from our neighbours and customers as we grow. We hope that local people and groups will use the café in the mornings and hire the space in the afternoons for events, clubs and meetings. Please talk to us about how you'd like to use it.
