The Meeting House

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
1. What is The Meeting House?
The Meeting House is a coffee house, meeting place, and venue with a mission to unite our community by providing a safe, fun, Christian-based environment and an outlet for connection, education, cultural enrichment and other community programming for the youth and Sedgwick community at large.

2. So…do I have to be a Christian to enjoy the Meeting House?

Well, of course not! We encourage everyone, regardless of their faith, to join us at The Meeting House and to support and take part in a fun environment and in our community programs.

3. When are you going to be open?
We are working hard to open by the 2016 Fall Festival. As a non-profit, our opening is very dependent on community support. In terms of hours of operation, we are still assessing what will work best for Sedgwick. Any feedback you could provide—whether you would be most likely to visit The Meeting House in the morning, mid-day, or after-school/evening, would be greatly appreciated!

4. Why is there a Bar and Stage?
The bar will be serving great coffee and soft drinks, and the stage is for music, drama, and other spoken word performances from local amateur and professional artists! We feel it is important to create a comfy, conversational environment for our community to hang out in and enjoy each other’s company. We feel great coffee, espressos, and delicious baked goods are a way to promote this relaxed environment. And, hopefully it will give people a reason to come back! We also want to be a venue for local visual artists to display their work.

5. What other kinds of programs will you offer?
We hope to offer programs that connect all of us in Sedgwick to one another and to meet as many needs as we can. This could mean a shared community events calendar, a volunteer center that connects community volunteers with those in need, practical workshops for students and adults, after-school events, leadership training, and much more. We look forward to getting more great ideas from you. If our community needs it, and we can empower and encourage and connect with each other to provide it, then let’s do it!!

6. Who has helped already?
We are very fortunate to have received assistance from Legacy Bank, the American Legion, the Sedgwick police community fund, local churches, the Harvey County United way, and many in-kind and cash donors from Sedgwick and the surrounding communities. The good news is that, counting our use of the building, we have raised or received pledges for almost $100,000.00 in cash or in-kind contributions.

7. How Can I HELP?
One thing that we have learned is that acquiring and renovating an old building, setting up a business plan for a Coffee Shop, and developing ideas for community programs (all with volunteers!) is a time-consuming AND expensive proposition! We could really use help with the following:
• Remodeling labor and materials for our location at 507 N. Commercial.
• Money or in-kind contributions for coffee, kitchen, and restaurant equipment.
• Volunteers and committee members to assist in initial staffing and administrative needs, including folks with trade, restaurant, accounting, event-planning, or other business experience.
• Volunteers and committee members to assist us with programming to further our mission.
