Welcome to the official home of Mark Twain Brewing Company on Facebook.
As many will tell you, we are not alone who looked upon this old building at 422 Nth Main St Hannibal MO, and saw a brew-pub. I've had lots of local folks say they were thinking the very same thing when they looked at this old empty building. And today it’s a reality: Mark Twain Brewing Company.
422 Nth Main St was most recently home to the Murphy Motors Dodge Dealership:1965-2005. And from 1945-1965 it was a John Deere Dealership owned and operated by Jerry Reigal. In March of 2013, however, the Martin/Smith family acquired the property and embarked on our journey to give 422 a new purpose. Both local and personal history inspired us to create a community around our brewery.
First of all, Moses Bates is Hannibal’s founding father and successful merchant. Second, Moses Bates sister Winifred was my great-great-great grandmother. I have family letters from Winifred Bates to their folks in Virginia describing their travels west beginning August 20, 1812. You see, Moses and Winifred had planned a short trip to Kentucky to visit their uncle, but Moses left in a huff after an argument with his father. Winifred said to their dad, and I’m paraphrasing, “...don’t worry…I’ll go fetch him and in a few short days we’ll return home...” Neither ever returned home again and the rest, as they say is, Hannibal History.
Our connection to this particular property is my great grandfather Malcolm Martin. Malcolm was an architect who designed many iconic buildings in Hannibal, and most notably the B & L building on the northeast corner of Broadway and 3rd Street. Although Malcolm didn't design 422 Nth Main St., for a time he managed Hannibal Carraige & Motor Company, operating in the current main structure: the manufacture and assembly of the wooden cabs & beds to Model T Ford Delivery Trucks. Ford subcontracted this work and the assembled trucks were sold from the second floor. Manufacturing and assembly took place on the main level which is currently the brewery & restaurant.
This story came from my grandfather, John Martin. He, by the way, built the Lighthouse. I like to think that the Lighthouse keeps watch overlooking Mark Twain Brewing Company from Cardiff Hill.
Cheers,
Beer Martin
