In 1882, at the age of 14, a local farmers son, William Barker, started his apprenticeship with Oxendales, a small draper's shop in Northallerton. As William Barker's career progressed, the shop became known as Oxendale and Barker, and eventually Barkers as it is today; comprising the High Street Department Store, and more recently our edge of town Home Furnishing Store. Roots Farm Shop & Cafe
Roots was established in 2008 through the need to improve the sustainability of the family farm and a desire to sell quality local food to the community. The farm ran by the Hutchinson family is a mixed beef and arable enterprise based at Home Farm, which is part of the Arncliffe Estate.
Roots is a social hub, giving locals the chance to chat with their neighbours and for those from the town to enjoy a taste of the countryside. We are pleased to offer a local outlet for the fantastic produce our farming neighbours are diversifying into throughout Yorkshire and the North East.
